I am a 22 year old female and often I scratch my skin for many hours. I feel that I have insects crawling on my skin. Is there a treatment for this?
You probably have neurotic excoriations-this is a disorder where people feel they have insects on their bodies and constantly scratch themselves. The disorder is not well understood and hence treatment is difficult. The one medication that psychiatrists usually prescribe for this disorder is doxepin. It is a sedating agent and quite effective. In other people, gabapentin has also been effective. My advice is to try doxepin which is cheap and readily available. It should be taken just before bedtime as it can cause sedation.
