I am a 26
year old male who smokes. Recently my left lung collapsed and I had a tube
inserted in my chest cavity-this was very painful. The surgeon says I will need
surgery. What do you think??
What you had was a spontaneous pneumothorax. Young men who smoke often develop spontaneous collapse of the lung. It requires a chest to re-expand the lung. There are many types of tubes that can be inserted.
In general, ER doctors are clueless about how to insert these tubes without causing pain. Not only are they rough but they do not provide adequate pain meds.
In the majority of cases, the episode may never occur again. Surgery is only necessary if you are a pilot, deep sea diver or have repeated episodes. My best advice is to stop smoking. You certainly do not need surgery now. Your surgeon is unethical in recommending you surgery. He is only doing the surgery for financial gain. The surgery can easily be done with a camera via small skin incisions. Of course, if you select a bad surgeon (of which there are plenty), complications will occur.
